No-one Came Back

Because I was dissolving.
Like sugar in warm water,
sweetness that disappeared
while everyone drank their fill.

I was the hand that reached out first,
the heart that always forgave,
the quiet witness to everyone’s storms
but no one noticed the rain
drowning me.

I thought bond meant never letting go,
never staying silent,
never asking to be held in return.
But all the while,
I was vanishing by degrees.

I dimmed slowly,
like a candle burning itself hollow,
and still no one saw the smoke.

So I stepped back,
without noise, without explanation,
just a quiet retreat
into the space where I could breathe again.

And when I was gone,
no one came searching,
no voice called my name.

Perhaps I was never truly there...
just a convenience,
a warm place to rest
until the light was spent.
